$4.75 million committed to Seed Technology Lab project
AgBio Communications
The project to expand and modernize the seed technology laboratory at
SDSU has received $4.75 million in pledge commitments. The estimated
cost for the expanded and modernized lab is $7 million.
When completed, the lab will help develop, enhance, and coordinate
research, testing, extension/outreach, and technical service in seed
and crop science, technology, and biotechnology at SDSU. It will also
allow SDSU to move to the forefront in developing the resources and
capabilities that will help producers, commodity organizations, and
private industries in S.D. take advantage of new opportunities in these
areas.
Project goals include:
• Modernized facilities for seed testing, genetic/trait analysis, and test development
• Development of cereal quality laboratory and integration of quality research between plant breeders and food scientists
• Expansion of genomic research in crop and grain quality, trait
identification and monitoring, and plant component extraction and
utilization
• Partnerships with private industry in research and commercialization
• Facilitation of proposed 2010 Center focusing on drought bio-technology research
• Facilitation of economic development opportunities in the
agricultural biotechnology and biorenewable industries of South Dakota
