The Opportunities Farm has $30,000 in funds available for student scholarships and research. Of the total funding, $5,000 is earmarked for scholarships and $25,000 is for funding undergraduate student research.

The Opportunities Farm, which is located near Lennox, is a gift received by the SDSU Foundation in the spring of 2001. Valued at $1.6 million, the 1,120 acres of land and feedlot facilities provide an outstanding opportunity to conduct research and education for SDSU students. LeRoy Poppens, the benefactor of the farm gift, envisioned the Opportunities Farm as both a working farm where students can experience hands-on livestock and agronomy research and a teaching facility.

A grant from the state of South Dakota in 2003 and an investment by the SDSU Foundation enabled the Opportunities Farm to construct three types for feedlot systems (confined, partially confined and open) to compare environmental impacts, livestock performance, physiological stress measurements, and selected nutritional trials.
